“Christ and Christmas voices Christian Science through song and object-lesson.”
Mary Baker Eddy, Miscellaneous Writings 1883-1896
Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science and author of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, regarded her illustrated poem, Christ and Christmas, as among her most important works.
Christ and Christmas was first published in 1893. Then, as now, the poem was accompanied by eleven charcoal and wash water-color drawings by James Gilman, who worked under Mrs. Eddy’s guidance and close supervision to portray the meaning of her text through the artwork.
In the years following, Mrs. Eddy continued to devote care and thought to this book. Although she felt it wise to withdraw it from circulation for a period shortly after its second printing, she authorized the book’s republication in 1897, with small changes at her direction.
